Israel Salary Calculator: Net vs Gross (2026)

TL;DR. An Israeli employee earning 30,000 NIS gross takes home approximately 22,600-23,200 NIS net after income tax, Bituach Leumi (National Insurance), health tax, and mandatory pension contributions. Use the tables below to look up take-home pay by salary band, understand which deductions apply, and compare total employer cost to employee net pay.

Israeli payroll deductions are layered: income tax runs on a progressive bracket system, Bituach Leumi (National Insurance Institute) takes a percentage up to a ceiling, health tax is a flat-rate levy, and mandatory pension contributions apply on both the employee and employer side. The result is that the gap between gross salary and take-home pay is significant — and the gap between what the employer pays and what the employee receives is even wider.

This page gives static reference tables for 2026 deduction rates and sample take-home calculations across common salary bands in Israeli tech. It is a reference tool, not a tax filing document. For individual tax situations — especially those involving equity, foreign income, or oleh chadash status — consult a licensed Israeli payroll accountant.

2026 Israeli income tax brackets

Israeli income tax is levied at progressive marginal rates. The brackets below apply to monthly taxable income for 2026. A tax credit point (nekudat zikui) is worth approximately 235 NIS per month and reduces tax payable directly. Every Israeli resident receives 2.25 base credit points; women receive 0.5 additional; single-parent families additional credits beyond these.

Monthly taxable income (NIS) Tax rate Bracket tax (on that portion) Cumulative max tax at bracket ceiling
0 – 6,790 10% 679 679
6,791 – 9,730 14% 412 1,091
9,731 – 15,620 20% 1,178 2,269
15,621 – 21,710 31% 1,888 4,157
21,711 – 45,075 35% 8,177 12,334
45,076 – 57,840 47% 5,999 18,333
57,841+ 50%

Note: The 50% bracket applies to income above the high earner threshold. Most Israeli tech employees earning 25,000-50,000 NIS gross per month fall primarily into the 31% and 35% brackets. The effective average rate (total tax / total income) is always lower than the marginal rate shown above.

Bituach Leumi and health tax rates (2026)

Bituach Leumi (National Insurance Institute, or NIL) contributions apply at two rates: a reduced rate on income below a ceiling and a higher rate above it. Health tax is a separate levy with its own rate structure. Both are deducted from employee gross salary.

Deduction Rate (low bracket) Rate (high bracket) Monthly ceiling (approx.) Who pays
Bituach Leumi (employee) 0.4% (up to ~6,300) 7% (above ~6,300) ~46,000 NIS Employee
Health tax (employee) 3.1% (up to ~6,300) 5% (above ~6,300) No ceiling Employee
Bituach Leumi (employer) 3.55% (up to ~6,300) 7.6% (above ~6,300) ~46,000 NIS Employer (on top)

Above the BL ceiling (~46,000 NIS/month), employer BL contributions stop. This means the employer cost curve flattens somewhat at high salaries. Health tax has no ceiling — it applies on the full gross salary regardless of amount.

Pension contributions (mandatory)

Mandatory pension (keren pensia) contributions apply to all Israeli employees. Both employee and employer contribute a percentage of gross salary. As of 2026, the mandatory rates are:

Contribution type Mandatory rate Notes
Employee (savings portion) 6% Tax-deductible for employee up to ceiling
Employer (savings portion) 6.5% Tax-free benefit for employee
Employer (severance / pitzuim) 8.33% Deposited into pension fund, released on termination
Total employer pension cost 14.83% 6.5% + 8.33% of gross

The employer's 8.33% severance contribution accumulates in the pension fund for the duration of employment. On voluntary resignation or termination, the treatment of these funds depends on tenure and the pension arrangement type. For hiring managers: the 8.33% is a real cost that appears on payroll even though the employee does not see it as monthly take-home pay.

Net take-home by salary band — reference table

The table below shows estimated monthly take-home pay at common gross salary levels for a typical Israeli tech employee — male, resident, receiving 2.25 credit points (approximately 529 NIS/month credit), contributing 6% to pension, and with no additional tax benefits. Figures are indicative estimates; actual take-home varies by individual circumstances.

Gross salary (NIS/month) Income tax (est.) BL + health (est.) Pension (6%) Total deductions Net take-home (est.) Net %
12,000 ~350 ~660 720 ~1,730 ~10,270 ~86%
18,000 ~1,800 ~1,100 1,080 ~3,980 ~14,020 ~78%
24,000 ~3,600 ~1,490 1,440 ~6,530 ~17,470 ~73%
30,000 ~5,600 ~1,870 1,800 ~9,270 ~20,730 ~69%
36,000 ~7,800 ~2,240 2,160 ~12,200 ~23,800 ~66%
42,000 ~10,200 ~2,600 2,520 ~15,320 ~26,680 ~63%
50,000 ~14,100 ~3,040 3,000 ~20,140 ~29,860 ~60%
65,000 ~21,600 ~3,700 3,900 ~29,200 ~35,800 ~55%
80,000 ~29,200 ~4,000 4,800 ~38,000 ~42,000 ~53%

All figures are estimates for reference purposes. Tax credits, deductions, exemptions (oleh chadash, specific benefit entitlements), and pension arrangements all affect actual take-home pay. Consult a licensed Israeli payroll accountant for individual calculations.

Total employer cost per employee

For hiring managers budgeting headcount, the gross salary the employee receives is not the full cost. Employer-side contributions — BL, pension savings, and pitzuim — add approximately 20-25% on top of gross salary, depending on the salary level. The table below shows estimated total employer cost at common Israeli tech salary bands.

Employee gross (NIS/month) Employer BL (est.) Employer pension (14.83%) Total employer cost (est.) Employer cost premium
20,000 ~1,380 2,966 ~24,346 +22%
30,000 ~2,030 4,449 ~36,479 +22%
40,000 ~2,820 5,932 ~48,752 +22%
50,000 ~3,330 7,415 ~60,745 +21%
65,000 ~3,730 9,640 ~78,370 +21%
80,000 ~4,000 11,864 ~95,864 +20%

Employer cost premium stabilizes at around 20-22% across the salary range because BL employer contributions are capped. At very high salaries (above the BL ceiling), the premium moves slightly lower as the BL component becomes a smaller fraction of total gross. The pension and pitzuim costs are uncapped and grow proportionally with gross salary.

Special cases that change the calculation

Several common situations in Israeli tech hiring alter the net vs gross calculation significantly.

Oleh chadash (new immigrant) tax exemption. Israeli citizens who make aliyah receive a 10-year tax exemption on income from foreign sources and additional exemptions on Israeli-source income in the first years. An oleh working for an Israeli company on a locally-structured contract typically pays reduced income tax for the first several years. The exact benefit depends on the year of aliyah and tax ruling.

Equity and RSUs. Equity income in Israel can be taxed under Section 102 capital gains treatment (25% flat rate at vesting/sale for approved plans) rather than as employment income at marginal rates. For engineers with meaningful equity packages — common at Israeli startups and multinational R&D centers — this distinction is significant. An engineer receiving 50,000 NIS/month gross plus 200,000 NIS in RSUs vesting in a year has a very different effective tax picture than the tables above suggest.

Foreign-source income. Engineers who work remotely for foreign companies and receive income in USD or EUR — common in the Israeli market — may have different BL treatment and may benefit from specific tax treaty provisions depending on the country of the paying company.

Pension arrangement type. The 6% employee pension contribution shown above is the mandatory minimum. Many Israeli tech companies offer enhanced contribution rates (7-8% employee, 7.5-8% employer savings) as a benefit. Higher contributions reduce taxable income slightly and increase long-term pension accumulation — but reduce short-term take-home pay.

How to read a Israeli payslip

Israeli payslips (תלוש שכר) typically show gross salary at the top, followed by additions (car allowance, meal vouchers, phone), then deductions in two columns — employee deductions and employer contributions — and final net pay. The employer contribution column is informational; those funds do not come out of the employee's gross but represent the employer's total cost above gross.

Key line items you will see:

  • Mas hachnasa (מס הכנסה) — income tax withheld at source
  • Bituach Leumi oveid (ביטוח לאומי עובד) — employee BL contribution
  • Mas briut (מס בריאות) — health tax
  • Keren pensia oveid — employee pension contribution (6%)
  • Keren pensia mevaker — employer pension contribution (6.5%)
  • Pitzuim — employer severance deposit (8.33%)
  • Nekudot zikui (נקודות זיכוי) — credit points applied, shown as a negative (reducing tax)
